1. Sort your documents into "done" and "unfinished"
You will need: • wastebasket
,
• filing box,
• compartment for "still to be done",
• folder for documents for tax returns or similar and
Write an essay for me.
How to do it:
Have the above items ready and take your documents.
Gradually sort each paper into the correct container. Always consider
do I have to do something with it (pay, copy, important for the tax return ...),
if not: do I have to keep the documents?
For example:
An unpaid bill : compartment for something to do
A paid invoice : storage box, if the guarantee for the purchased item has not yet expired (otherwise: waste paper basket). If you need the invoice for the next tax return: folder for documents for the tax return
Account statements : filing box
So that's how:
Insurance is also an annoying topic for most people: You can find a nice overview of the most important benefits of travel cancellation insurance [advertising] here .
Next, let's take a look at the filing box:
2. This is how you store your private and completed documents
Don't make the mistake of saving it all! Throw away what has done its duty: notices for events that have already ended, flyers from the pizza service, which has not been around for a long time, guarantee certificates and invoices for the 5-year-old hair dryer ...
Documents that you want to (or have to) keep and have dealt with are best put in folders. Depending on the size of the household, there are one or more folders for private documents, but overall there are not that many categories. For me it is for example:
Category 1: Very important documents that must be kept for a long time or for life
Graduation certificates, birth certificates, documents on social security, etc. It is best to create your own folder for this so that these important documents are always at hand and

In the next folder (depending on the size of the household, there may be several folders) comes the second category:
Category 2: Important documents, but only for a limited period of time
Here you can muck out your documents from time to time, because it makes no sense to keep an invoice for items that have long been replaced by others or whose guarantee has expired for a long time (if you want to be on the safe side, you keep invoices for 3 years). Rental contracts for apartments that you haven't lived in for a long time can also be thrown away. (The respective retention periods for private individuals can be found here, for example .) In my folders there are the following subdivisions for these documents:
Receipts and bills
Instructions for use (only save the German-speaking part)
Guarantee certificates
Documents about subscriptions (for notice periods, keep as long as the subscription exists)
Bank statements
Tax bills
Rental agreements and utility bills
Insurance policies and documents (as long as the insurance exists or 3-5 years after payment)
And that's it :)
My grandfather had his very own way of handling important private documents: he simply threw many letters from the pension insurance in the trash - without thinking about it any further. This is especially astonishing, because my grandpa was a rationally thinking person who was usually far from chaos and rash action. Fortunately, my grandmother and my mom mostly noticed when important documents were missing and so the unpleasant consequences of his rash behavior did not occur.
When a reader asked me questions about sorting private documents, I remembered my grandpa and decided to take up this important organizational topic here on the blog - after all, this annoying topic of " paperwork " affects every household. The reader wanted to know:
how can I sort my very chaotic private documents ,
where do i start and
What criteria should I use to sort the documents?
For him (and for you) I have made a sketch for pre-sorting and instructions for storage:
